A reminder: the dinosaur DNA in the mosquitoes in the amber in Juriassic Park was incomplete so the imaginary scientists spliced in frog DNA. Frogs have motion based vision..Reptiles have more general vision, however the sidewinders’ infrared is more motion based than their light vision. .Binocular vision requires the brain to compare two slightly different images to gain distance information, most definitely not motion based..That said, motion DOES attract our attention, which is why we often overlook motionless objects.
@DavidHuieGreen…I’v seen a few movies since that also use Jeff Goldblum’s lines “Must go faster!” (Independence Day was one, and Jeff Goldblum used it!) as well as “That’s an impact tremor!”, some with a cup of coffee moving (water on the dashboard in Jurassic Park) or something similar. When something’s good….copy it!
I’m not particularly fond of snakes, and had one chase after me when mowing the lawn. Although it was a “harmless” garter snake, it still had a very large mouth and tried to take a piece of my heel as I passed by.In any case, just once I would like to see the snake somehow grab the club and go after the fat broad!

If it’s big and it doesn’t move, it’s the environment; ignore it. If it’s small and it doesn’t move, it’s also the environment; ignore it. If it’s big and it moves, it’s a predator; JUMP! If it’s small and it moves, it’s food; stuck your tongue out at it.
Apparently, I did not provide enough information. I was taken by surprise at the rapid response of this snake. I knew we had them around the house as I saw evidence; i.e., movement in the rock beds, cast off skins, etc.After passing this aggressive snake, I did a bit of investigating. It was a hill on the South side of the house, and along the hill, the neighbor built a rock retaining wall. I was fortunate to see the snake returning through a gap at the base of the wall.After further investigation, I discovered a nest with several (I didn’t count them) baby snakes. It is my assumption, the “mother” was startled by the sound of the mower on the first pass around the yard, and likely came out to investigate.When I came by the second time, it is likely she sensed a threat to her brood, and seeing me and the mower pass by, took a defensive approach. All I remember from the initial sighting was her rapid movement towards my heel!I am in my mid sixties, and although I have a few scars from an occasional animal attack, I have never been bitten by a snake. I’d like to keep it that way, thank you.

Have never been chased by a garter snake or any other snake. Just really don’t like the unexpected squirm under foot or between fingers. .
