Was he expecting his father to oppose the plan?

I’m kind of lost here. What just happened?

I guess it’s just that early on, Dad taught those boys to fear and respect him as the Family Patriarch. Seeing how he’s drastically out-weighed and out-numbered, that was a smart move on Dad’s part, because he clearly wouldn’t have been able to force them into anything they really didn’t want to do.So I’m thinking maybe that Primal Fear has kicked in, and the boys are over-reacting.

It’s called reverse psychology. They think that by their father saying OK, it’s really a bad thing.

What does he mean by “Dad went through the roof?” That sounds like he was angry, but he doesn’t seem angry to me.

…You know, when someone does something out of character that everyone thinks is an improvement (in this case he takes being careful with money to the extreme where he lives like a miser) the thing to do is gently encourage that behavior, NOT to make them feel self conscious about the decision by bringing it up and contrasting it to their usual behavior all the time. Unless of course everyone is just being extremely petty and jealous of Otis getting such a favor in which case screw them.

If he had just gotten on the train, he would be there by now!

the great thing about the train is, you get the cost of an airplane combined with the speed of a bus

The old man needs to mind his own business. I would tell him, “It is my money and I do with it as I like. Now shut up”Nothing makes me madder than some fool telling me how to spend my hard earned money.

He was understanding, what does he mean, ‘through the roof?’ What business is it of his anyway?
