I got called a couple of years ago and wanted to serve, but I knew the judge, the district attorney, the chief prosecutor, the DA investigator, and the police detectives involved (my husband is career law enforcement), so after the defense used their strikes on two cases, eventually the judge dismissed me and said if I got called again, to request to be put in the civil suit pool.
Friend of mine, a recently naturalized citizen, was looking forward to his first time on a jury. When we incredulously asked him why, he replied he wanted to experience fully what it meant to be an American; and jury duty was part of the experience. He was then serving on a local court, petit jury as I recall. About six weeks later he got a summons to report for duty on a federal grand jury. “Why are they calling me for this?” he asked, now the incredulous one. “I just got off a jury.” “Yep,” I replied, “you’re an American.”
And I managed to read a book while waiting to be excused (my dismissive attitude toward the system, partly based on my brother who WAS a lawyer does not incline anyone to select me).

Now that I’m retired, I don’t care if I get called into jury duty, but i haven’t. Sad now that not getting paid no longer warrants excusal.

Yeah. I always liked jury duty but now they don’t call geezerettes as old as I.

They don’t discriminate here. I still have not deposited the $4 check (about) and not sure where I put it, but I was called last month.
