American IPAs are really not. They are overly malty and hoppy. To find out what IPA is supposed to be like, one has to go no further than the original – - Bass Ale. I like the American variation – it is a style unto itself – but it should go by a more appropriate name, like “Over-the-Top-In-Your-Face American Ale”.
