The Boondocks by Aaron McGruder for August 21, 2021

Huey: A child, pre-adolescent, forced into labor by local authorities. Incredibly long hours, sweltering, dangerous working conditions, a miserable existence with little hope of bettering one's lot in life... ...All for virtually no compensation... You know, Nike was in a lot of trouble with Garry Trudeau because of this kind of thing!! Granddad: Shut up and mow the lawn, boy! And who's Garry Trudeau?!

Shortly before the strip ended, Huey mentioned a cartoon using the N word. The cartoon was of course Boondocks. Between that and this, he gets frightfully close to admitting that he’s a character in a comic strip.

Huey, just suck it up and finish mowing the lawn.

Growing up on a small farm, our lawn area including the ditch edges along the road was about an acre in total. I cut it ever week with a push mower, a job which took about 4 hours each time and my additional 3 hours a day feeding and watering our animals and other random farm jobs for the princely sum of $1 a week, assuming my parents had that much money on hand and could actually give me my allowance. This was back in the late 1970’s, and 1980’s. I have no patience for those who whine about spending an hour or so with a gas powered or electric lawn mower cutting an urban home lawn.

I recall times in this strip where the grass was 3 feet tall. Just mow the grass Huey.
