we need some one who watches lost to leave a comment to tell us what this means . I too have never watched the show.so will someone please tell us.thankyou……
Lost did not Jump the shark, I’ve seen them all. Every season they purposley find a new way of telling the story. Season 6 has been planned to be the final season since season 3 or 4.
And since it is Lost (the greatest sci-fi show ever.), This season is starting off less far fetched than the last (frozen donkey wheel anyone?).
For those who don’t know what “jumped the shark” means, it’s when a TV show reaches that point where it has become a parody of itself and therefore no longer really worth watching. The most famous instance of this – and the one for which the phenomenon was named – is the above-mentioned “Happy Days” episode where they traveled to Hawaii and a leather-coat-clad Fonzie jumped over a shark while water skiing.
Having never watched “Lost,” I also would not know if it has jumped the shark.
I think it means that “Lost” was great until it started going downhill at some point. I don’t watch the show so I couldn’t say when that was.
My guess is that the comic creators loved the show, but now think it’s not very good anymore, and this is their forum to vent their opinion. I think it would have been funnier to use another show like “The Simpsons” where there has been debate whether it’s been on the air too long or not. I think there’s even been a Simpsons episode poking fun at themselves, esp because that’s what they do best.
“Jumping the shark” is the moment when it becomes apparent that a show has peaked, and it’s never going to get back up there. Generally, the moment manifests itself in some kind of gimmick, like a radical cast or venue change, or a “very special” episode.
Jumping the Shark means a last ditch effort to keep a dying show alive by the creators; it comes from the Happy Days episode in which Fonzie, in a show of “I can be cool in both coasts” jumped a shark tank on waterskis while the gang was visiting California. The image of him in his leather jacket on waterskis really marked the demise of the show
Zankou: Right on. I finally got my daughter and son-in-law started on the first season on disc. They took only a few weeks to catch up entirely and eat the show up. Worth every little brain strain and perfect for New folks to find on Disc and learn about at leisure. A total mythology, Buffy style, but with no previous basis.
You’d think BC with it’s mythology of men and dinos together would appreciate a mythology of good and evil.
I do watch Lost, and whether it has “jumped the shark” is, as always when this accusation is made, a matter of opinion and personal taste. There are a number of themes in the show, including good vs evil (and how do you know whether to believe someone who tells you “we’re the good guys”?) and the implications of time travel. Is time immutable, or can you change your destiny? When it was revealed that the series was basically structured around time travel, it lost a lot of viewers who had enjoyed the enigmas of the show but were not into so blatantly science fictional a theme. For others, including myself, it just became more interesting. I certainly do not think it has “become a parody of itself” as one of the commentors above defined jumping the shark. Apart from some details, the show has been planned out from the beginning by its executive producers, and is in this final season working towards the planned conclusion.
Thanks, everyone, for jumping right in there with the shark and giving me some toothsome answers. (One could, however, have stuck with my “stage name” here and unaccountably did not - not that it ultimately matters.)
NN2K, I wouldn’t agree that “Get Fuzzy” has jumped the shark, but it’s true that it hasn’t really lived up to early promise. “Having passed its peak” isn’t the same as a shark jump, and to me “Fuzzy” still merits a place on the comics page.* Perhaps you disagree, though.
(*) Actually, in this instance I prefer to read the strips in complilation form rather than day-to-day; it seems to work better for me when I can read a month’s worth of strips in one sitting; “Pearls Before Swine”, on the other hand, amuses me one at a time, but annoys me in compilation.
I watched about three seasons of Lost but I just can’t stay very long with anything that doesn’t have an end, (like soaps) so I got bored of it. My family love it and have it all on DVD. An example of Jumping the shark was with the TV show Dallas when someone shot JR. at the season end. That kept it alive at least for the first few episodes of the next season.
@ Johanan Rakkav. That was ‘My Bad,’ I shouldn’t have taken that liberty. It might be somewhat like what we run into when junk mail proudly lists our Social Security number. It was dumb. (Sorry.)

I know what Jump the Shark means and I guess this is referring to the show “Lost”. I don’t watch that show, so I wouldn’t know.
I also remember the “Happy Days” episode with Fonz jumping the shark on water skis.

Or when they start having “Celebrity guests” or recycle previous contestants (in the case of reality game shows like survivor)

Nobody mentioned that today’s strip is in black & white!
I’m not sure about the strip anymore either — all the characters are looking different than they used to — and not in an improved way, IMHO.

I watched the first episode. As Doc said, good but not good enough to follow.

Booo….
Lost is one of the best TV shows out there. Of course, you pretty much have to see every single episode in order for it to make any sense to you.
As to “jumping the shark”, Lost has not done that. It works, it’s sci-fi, and it actually flows logically.
My two-cents, go criticize a different TV show!
