    I remember back when they started ‘non-smoking’ rooms in the US. At first they, unbelievably, would make every other room a non-smoking room. Of course, EVERY room smelled like cigarette smoke anyway. Then they went to separate floors for smoking and non=smoking. Still reeked of smoke. I think social pressure, insurance companies and the Fire Marshall’s convinced them that ‘no smoking’ was the best way to go.

    Over in Europe, England, Spain and Germany all allowed smoking.

    I worked as a (chemical) engineer on production plants. One of the nice bonuses was that flame-producing devices (matches, lighters, etc) were absolutely forbidden. There was no prohibition on cigarettes; but with no way to light them people just didn’t bring them. A nice working atmosphere.

    This reminds me of when my state first required restaurants to have a “No Smoking” section. We asked for a table in the no smoking section, so the hostess put a small “no smoking” sign on our – table in the middle of the dinning room. We left and never went there again.
