Seeing Diet and Warbucks go at each other is quite an entertaining show! Neither is used to not having things his own way. Maybe something useful will come out of this!
“The Montauk Project is an alleged series of secret United States government projects conducted at Camp Hero or Montauk Air Force Station on Montauk, Long Island for the purpose of developing psychological warfare techniques and exotic research including time travel. Jacques Vallée describes allegations of the Montauk Project as an outgrowth of stories about the Philadelphia Experiment.”

Of course, if this is a time travel story, this brings back the issues I tried to mention earlier in this story:.If this is time travel, WHY must Tracy be GONE the precise amount of time in the present that he is staying in the past? (And none of this explains the bogus June 1944 calendar).Time travel being time travel, there is no reason he couldn’t return precisely (or within seconds) of when he was taken away! (A smart Doctor Who would do just that!).He could even return at a point before he disappeared, leaving us with two Dick Tracy’s for a period of time! (A la Back To the Future).I like what Neil Wick said last week and will work it in right now: For time travel to demand that Tracy be gone from the present the precise amount of time that he is present in the past, is akin to Neil’s observation that a “conk on the head” inevitably leads to “amnesia” in fiction..It may make a good story line. But it just ain’t the way things work!
I remember back yonder (before a lot of you were born) that Tracy lost a goodly percentage of his readership because of the sci-fi turn. I know a lot of the fan base reveled in it, but a lot of conventional crimefighters thought Tracy went off the chart and they stopped following the strip. I, for one, did exactly that. Today, with the extended (permanant?) crossover, and the time travel theme, Team Tracy might be making the same mistake. There’s no doubt that Tracy’s popularity was like a yo-yo with the writers changing of the guard. The last one almost said the eulogy. I’d hate to see Team Tracy lose fans it worked so diligently to get.
My newspaper (Houston Chronicle) is no slouch when it comes to circulation and has a large comics section. Every year or so, the readers vote on which comics they want to see. Tracy loses out, and continues to lose out. They run it online, but not in the print editions. Marketing dictates that when you have a winner, stay with it. Coca-Cola found that out when they tried to change it. IHTDNOANMI.
The irony is I really like Annie and I am not a fan of Fake Moon Maid yet up to this point I have to say I found the FMM saga much more exciting, suspenseful and overall enjoyable then the current Annie the Riveter saves clueless Dick story has been. We’ll see.

regarding this debate whether time travel is a red herring or not…why couldn’t it be fake regarding where Tracy is, but real in regards to Diets experiment?
Thanks, Gweedo, and welcome back. Lots of fun to be had with this crossover. While Thunder Island may or may not exist in a 1944 time warp (“…rumored to be the site of a nuclear accident in 1944, during the development of the Atomic Bomb, causing an evacuation of all personnel.” 6/25), I applaud the audacity of this multifaceted tale. We don’t yet have a clear sense of the progress of Smith’s Project “Blue Image,” but I like to see new R+D at Smith Industries. Time may be circular, or may flow like water, but I’ll keep making time for this strip.
Diet Smith is on the defensive. Sam is hearing about time travel, apparently for the first time. Warbucks is full of accusations. I wouldn’t be surprised if Warbucks has also been researching time travel at some point. It’s not out of the realm of what he might do.
Sam may or may not be smoking today, but Diet Smith certainly is.
