My brother has two grown daughters who live in two different states, with whom he hardly speaks. I have two grown daughters who are still in my house, with whom I speak every day. I sometimes wonder which is better. For me and my wife, having them around works out fine.

In the Navy we’d have called him a FLAB. Free Loading Air Breather. Unnecessary waste of water and oxygen (I was a sub sailor and both are precious)

I, too, was a stay at home son, but I had a job and paid rent. Leeching off of my mother was never an option.

It’s amazing how many intelligent, thoughtful, college-educated people my wife and I know who have “loser” sons.

I joined the AF when I was 17. Sent to Vietnam at 19, spent 12 years in in total. Once moved from east to west coast and it was 5 years before I gave my parents my new address. Only flew in for a weekend as I was located less than an hour from them while I was going to school. My son and 3 daughters all managed to leave home either going to college or finding a job across the country. My son joined the Army, spent 25 years and retired. He calls every once in a while, maybe once every 5 years or so. 1 daughter works for a state court, last time we saw her was 10 years ago, last time she called us was a year ago. Another daughter is an EA for a VP of a video game company, still another is a supervisor at medical lab. None live in the state they grew up in. We raised our kids to be totally independent. They have no desire to ever live with us-we moved to still another state and purchased a small house so no room at the Inn for them. That was how I was raised, that is how I taught my kids. It worked and I am totally satisfied

My brother’s daughter is going on 24 yrs and has zero ambitions: no college is good enough for her (has never applied) and only works one temp job ( that’s if the store needs her that day). The newest fun thing is her parents are now dealing with her coming home at 6Am in the morning….party…party…party………Sheesh!!
