I think the residents of Pitts (and environs) that go to Pitts HS and to the CC in the background, there, are long-lost descendants of the Sill- Hewett family. A shadowy family that was into boxing , dancing and puppets …. Some were tall, some weren’t. And I don’t think the Sil-Hewetts cared much for the “night” life or ventured out beyond the lights on the streets where they lived, come to think of it….

Hah, reminds me of my community college. Getting out of a class early was only good if you didn’t have to wait an hour for your next class :P

I attended a few CCs on my way to transferring over to a 4-yr. If I remember correctly, the parking was Always the most aggravating thing about the entire experience. Fortunately, the last CC I attended had a direct bus line to it. Same for the 4-yr. Didn’t have to get on campus at 7:00 am just to Find a space LOL ;)

At my kids’ colleges, that’s what they do.

Not to mention it is an awesome university! Both of my cousin’s children graduated from there. Of course, the weather was a Big difference from that of Phoenix! They both saw that as a plus, however… ;)

Heh, my college was like this too. It’s one of the reasons why I quit a few years ago, and have only just quit again after finishing a small certificate. Too much lab time and very little teaching. Of course there are some exceptions, some of those teachers make you work your behind off, but I didn’t feel like it was a good investment anymore. I was either bing tired out, or I was bored.

I guess in an “off hand” sort of way, you can look at “being dropped” from class this way: training for what would happen if you called out on your 1st day at work…..

Possibly this is more of an orientation class. The real first class will be next week. After all, the instructor did tell everyone to have their textbook next week.

Yup. Been to some first classes like this even at a four-year college, in fact the first meeting of one of my best and most challenging classes was exactly like this. In fairness to the teacher, the roster often isn’t firmed in the first week because some students are still jockeying to get in, and others will drop the class as they finalize their schedules and/or get into classes they want or need more. Luann will need to be on her toes if his his no-nonsense attitude in this first class carries over to the rest of the quarter!

I’m surprised the professor was actually there for the 1st day and not a teaching assistant. Many classes don’t bother because people are still signing up, haven’t got the textbook, or are only there to see if they cleared the wait list….like he mentioned. The syllabus is most likely online.

A I recall, that’s pretty much how they did it in some classes on the first day.

Based on Luann’s reaction, this class seems to be “Introduction to Disappointment”, taught by Mr. Raine Onmyparade.

I had that same class 40 years ago!

So, Pitts CC, or at least this particular instructor, has a “first day policy,” requiring that a student be present for the first class or be dropped from the roster (helps limit rampant class-shopping and reduce drops and improve retention, all things of concern to the bean-counters who rule the college). But I am greatly disappointed that he chose to blow off most of his class period by dismissing the kids after only calling the roll: class-time is limited and too precious to waste!

well you get your syllabus online and there’s probably an assignment listed to get started on. That’s the way it is. Been there, done that, got the sheepskin.

OK…. Well, I was “half right.” At least it wasn’t Fogarty, but it wasn’ “Mr. Hunky” either. Maybe that role will be given to one of the students in the class.

Anyway, I don’t ever recall these “orientation classes” in my univ. They’d have been unheard of. Class time was precious and not to be wasted. After registration, you were expected to go to the Univ. Bookstore and buy the textbooks, having them in hand before the 1st day of class. And usually, there would be a “pre-class” assignment sheet either next to the book pile for that class or on the prof’s office door. So if your “Prof. Kingsfield” came barreling in and asked “Mr. HaaaaahhhTTT, Will you recite the facts of the case of ‘Hawkins vs. McGee’,” theoretically, you’d be ready Day 1.

One of the best professors I ever had said, after late registrants kept pouring in, that some might consider this a compliment, but he was offended because the late arrivals had missed important things.

Welcome to college where everyday is a surprise!

When I was in university that happened on the first day in about half the classes. Most of the others just went over what the professor expected of us and maybe had everyone introduce themselves if it was a small enough class. Only a very few actually lectured.

Yep. That’s the first day of college, alright.

Go to the quad, have some beer, toss a frisbee around and meet some new people. Enjoy it.

That doesn’t sound like the California college system when I attended. The instructors told the class what they expected from the class, gave tips on how to ace the class and then sent the class to the bookstore. Do they still use Scantrons in college? I don’t know how many freshmen asked me after class if they really needed Scantrons after the instructor emphasized how important it was to have them. “Yes, you do, as a matter of fact. Don’t try coming in without one.”

College was different…..

So their only homework for the whole first week is to go buy the textbook? This seems like just the kind of class Luann would really appreciate.

That is EXACTLY how first days at community colleges go. I love it! lol

Will Luann fit in to the Community College? Or, will she wish that she is at Moony U. with Quill and Bernice?

okay, now time to explore, the bookstore, the library, the cafeteria, the student lounge, not necessarily in that order, and of course the athletic field / gym for hot looking dudes; but I bet Luann just slinks off, back home to mommy and daddy, pets puddles, and calls Bernice.

I go to school now, and that’s not too far off the first week. Convocation, freshman meetings, blah, blah, blah. of my three 2.5 hour classes this opening week, only one went the distance.

I think the ‘far too many students for class spaces’ is a national problem right now, not just a problem in CA. During the recession, most state legislatures greatly reduced the funds they provide to both community and university systems. And both those systems responded by reducing or eliminating subjects, firing even tenured profs, and limiting some subjects to only once a year. Problem is, the students keep coming anyway…

Been through college several times. First day syllabus, overview of expectations of material to be turned in, essays etc., known changes of textbook and lab material, roll call, what to read in textbook by next class. Which gave some leeway for being able to get the correct text book and extra materials from book store. Not unusual for book store to not have current edition on first day. That happened more than once, and occasionally students will jump the gun and purchase wrong used editions. MUST match syllabus.

Or buy used, which is what most kids do these days…

Welcome to college! Had a prof one time that gave everyone an “A” if you didn’t miss a class….easy A….class met twice a week….

Yes, Scantrons are fill-in-the-circle forms for multiple choice tests. Apparently some new students, even older new students, think the instructors hold up one of those forms and tell them they need them for the class only to hear themselves talk.

And commenters named Caldwell, Williams, or Zinns? If you got a shout-out, we want to know!

I don’t get it. Why does the blackboard say “Mr. Raine…” where the Roll says “Greg Evans 9-5”? Does this mean Greg Evans teaches the class all day, except for the noon hour when Mr. Raine… fills in? Or does this mean Greg Evans is the one student Mr. Raine… has been warned about, the one who could be a real troublemaker?

Apropos to not much; All the names Mr. Raine calls out have double letters.

MO of my lazy profs/TAs: Welcome students, ake attendance, assign text book, dismiss.*MO of most my other profs/TAs: Post first day reading assignments in advance; welcome students, in-depth lecture, dismiss. (But this was a 4-year school.)

We have those options here at my university, too. I have bought some of my books, used and new, at the bookstore. But for several of my classes, including Summer II and this fall, I’ve had to rent, mainly because of cost. It costs me $30-some to rent the books from Barnes and Noble instead of shelling out more than $100.00 at the university bookstore. Textbooks are getting too f-ing expensive!

Even in my first year of college, I don’t think I had any classes that ran like that. There was the English class where the instructor told us that if anyone could guess his given name, said person would get an A for the course and would be excused from all classes and papers. In the days before social media, no one coming in the door had an idea that (1) this offer was coming down or (2) that his given name was Menalcus.

You would wonder if, with the formulas for inflation, GDP, futures shares, interest rates and anything else “Wall Street”, if “cosigners” for loans would ever need to know about “cosines”?

Wow! Already learning lessons in the first minute of class.

You guys should of planned ahead and went to college when I did. Right about 1980, larger state university was less than 4 grand a year including $1100 for full room and board. Of course you could buy a nice new car for around $5000 and gas was .50 a gallon.

On my first day, I got assigned a three-page essay, due Thursday. Got the book and read it that night, wrote my essay Wednesday.

If Luann went to the bookstore a week before class, she might have been able to pick out a good used book for 1/3 the price of a new one. But, one does have to be early as halfway decent books are gone in a flash… ;)

Brdshtt! Whoa! I am duly impressed! I had one that was a bit smaller, but seems to have most of the functions yours has. It cost about $100 or so, but then this is x years ago LOL ;)

Whoops. Maybe she should have gone to a different school.
