There was once a “Garfield” Sunday comic where Jon tells Garfield that cats don’t ring doorbells when they want in. Garfield goes back out and madly scratches the door… much to Jon’s annoyance.
That’s nothing. My mom’s cat learned to call my stepfather by name. (Mind you, it made it easier that my stepfather was named “Ralph”, and Yang had that purebred Siamese voice.)
I have two cats – they are siblings. The male cat always knocks loudly on the door and when I open the door, his sister comes in with him. If she wants in, she does not knock, she meows very very silently but insistently, so I can hear her after all.
One of our neighbors has a jingle bell suspended from a ribbon tied to the inside knob on her front door. When her cat wants out, he bats at the jingle bell.

I think it’s a porch railing. Don’t feed them or they’ll never quit doing that trick!

I knew a cat that was taught to ring the bell to be let in, it took about. 10 minutes with treats!

I’ve had cats who could open doors by door knobs, knock and come when whistled (all with no instruction)

I had a cat who would come to my room’s window to get my attention to come inside the house.
