As RWJAMES mentioned above, there is a Gold Cup in soccer. But it’s only held in odd-numbered years, so the joke didn’t make sense when published in 2014.
Also, the Gold Cup isn’t that well-promoted in the United States, and only the most devoted soccer fans get “Gold Cup fever” as compared to “World Cup fever.”
