At their age… pockets do good. Unless you tend to pick up a lot of interesting things you find along the roadside and in the parks and woods where you walk. Then a rucksack will do well. grab a pillowcase, fold over the hem at the opening, sew it down. Cut 2 slits, one on either side of a seam and thread a cord through from one slit to the other. Tie the ends of the cord together and there’s your rucksack, satchel, bag.

Of course, rucksacks do nothing for the frogs and snakes you might find along your walk.
