Back in high school, the two top guys in the advanced math class had memorized PI to 50 places. So I decided to be different and memorized e to 50 places in one night. Those two got all the girls. I got a job at Sperry Rand. Go figure.
I’m guilty, too. 111 digits. Ends with my birthday, 513. Once I offered a room full of college students $20 to anyone who could recite 20 digits. Two kids could. One commented that this was the first time that that knowledge had been of any benefit to him.
With pi to 20 digits you can accurately calculate the circumference of the Earth’s orbit to the nearest micro-inch. Assuming you know the distance to the Sun to the nearest micro-inch, and the orbit were circular. My point being that 9 to 12 digit accuracy is much more than necessary for all physical measurements on Earth.
According to wikipedia, 24% of the world’s population comes from countries that use a comma as a decimal place. They include Canada, Chile and Spain. It’s not wrong if it’s different.
I can claim 8 decimal points. It’s all I ever needed. In my high school/college days, we didn’t have calculators yet. Slide rules, for all of their usefulness, were still only as accurate as the user’s interpretation.

My 16 year old can recite Pi to about 140 digits. He’s not a huge idiot as you say.

Think that’s a decimal point, not a comma.

Some places use a comma for a decimal point.

We sure were a bunch of dorks.
