Sorry, but to us Science Fiction Fans Hokas are small, Furry, brilliantly imitative Aliens.

(Storys about them were written by Poul Anderson starting back in the 50’s and are still as delightful today as they were a half-century ago, find ’em and ENJOY!)

More like lemon juice on a paper cut? -Re: Frazz’s Little Feat t-shirt yesterday – I can’t believe it took so long for me to remember, but the light bulb finally came on. I posted a picture of the album cover, if anyone might be interested.

Right… just puzzling this out….…. a little rain on the last day of freedom makes it a tiny bit less enjoyable….

So …. Miss Plainwell says the little girl (anybody know her name?) should be glad, cos now the transition from the bright days of summer to (what she sees as) the bleak prison of school will be that wee percentage less abrupt?

Which, the girl replies, mitigates the pain about as much as a well-padded shoe would, if you fell from the sky with no chute.

    Anyhow… from yesterday…. (sorry, just gotta) ….

Jessegooddoggy …. I’m in Sonoma County. Our farmers markets haven’t ended. Some are year round… and local tomatoes will go into probably October or November.I fact, I volunteer at a huge tomato festival in late September.

The market where I work ended because it’s from 5 to 8:30 pm, and kind of a street fair, with prepared food vendors, music and crafts, besides the produce.

It starts getting too dark and cold in the evening after mid August..

    And quickly….

Arianne… good memory to connect that album cover with Frazz’s shirt! As for that little boy… he’s probably too young now, barely 2, to remember it later…but maybe it will help instill an appreciation of good, healthy food.

to several people… tomatoes are a “botanical fruit” because they develop from a ripening ovary and contain seeds…. but we don’t CALL them fruit. Other botanical fruits include peas, cucumbers peppers and beans…ALL of which we call vegetables.

(Botanically, the only true vegetables are parts of the plant itself, …like leaves, stems and roots.) We reserve the name “fruit” for sweet things…. But some customs officer wanted to collect more import duty 150 years ago and labeled some tomatoes “Fruit.” It went all the way to the Supreme Court and was struck down, but it was a good story, so the nonsense persists.

    And…. just cos somebody asked…LOL….

He’s right – he being Jef Mallet. I had to look up “Hoka”. In my day, (I can’t believe I said that) it was “Nikes” or “Reebocks”. Since I haven’t been running in 20 years, I haven’t kept up with the latest footwear. Now cycling gear, that’s different… Keep the shiny side up!

I’d look up the term “hola,” but mu dictionary says “no results found.” This strip used to be great, lately it’s just been self-indulgent.

“Anybody who is not a runner is going to get that.” It hurts when Mallett has a teacher using double negatives.

As for the joke – context is everything. After her comment, it’s fairly obvious.

Tacopielver… here in N CA we’ve had three or four years of strange summers. My tomatoes, even though in pots cos of the gophers, always grew taller than me… these days they’re only half my height.

Periods of drought, unseasonable temperatures, whether hot or cold… even rain at the wrong time….

all of that has made the plants small, spindly and less productive.Last year was worse….some got wilt and died, even VFN hybrids.

This year they look healthy… but by the time they ripen, the tomatoes are over-size, sunburnt, bland and watery.

Nonetheless… the cherry tomatoes are mostly great, and nothing from the grocery store comes anyplace close, even to the unusually large, watery Early Girls, …. so I’ll keep trying.
