Boopsie: Isn't it beautiful? Woman: It surely is. I knew it'd be worth the trip from Perth... Boopsie: Perth? You came to see Elvis' grave all the way from Australia? Woman: Oh, I had to, miss. You have no idea what "Strangers in the Night" once meant to me. Boopsie: But... Woman: That song practically changed my life. Really. Boopsie: It was nice of you to come, ma'am. Woman: He had such a distinctive sound, don't you think?

I thought Frank Sinatra sang “Strangers in the Night”.

That puts Elvis ahead of Frank and John Wayne both.

I had some spare time in Memphis once and visited Graceland. I came away with a lot of respect for Elvis. I got the impression he was basically a very decent person who was in wa-a-a-y over his head. By all accounts he was a good soldier, and people in the military respect him for doing his duty. And while “Colonel” Parker made out handsomely, he did okay for Elvis.
As for the Jungle Room, it just screams 1970. I told my wife it was the sort of place my folks would have built if they’d had the money.

Dave Barry wrote a nice piece on the Elvis phenomenon, and said he came across as a nice guy. Read elsewhere that the culture he grew up in was cars, guns, and women, and when you had money you indulged in all three (c.f. Jerry Lee Lewis).

Clark Kent and BuckyKatt999 – Although I’m not a big fan of Sinatra personally, Frank DID do his duty and reported for induction. However for health reason, he was classed 4F and was rejected for military service.

Looking back at some of the shows Elvis did, it amazes me now how talented he really was. As a kid, I didn’t have an appreciation for that.
