This also means that the monster was behind Kenny 20 minutes ago. Bye bye Kenny.

It takes radio waves four minutes to get to Mars (give or take). What’s the other 16 minutes? Vacuum tubes?

At its closest, Mars is only about 56 million kilometres away, but it isn’t always at its closest. As Earth and Mars move in their orbits, the distance between them can increase to as much as about 360 million kilometres (when they’re on opposite sides of the Sun). That works out to just about twenty minutes for radio waves to travel that distance – each way.

What gets me about most space movies is that there are explosive sounds in space. The last Star Trek even had engine sounds IN SPACE!

I remember reading a manga where the characters hear church bells in space, and one asks how this is possible. The more experienced traveler explains that the nearby planet is inhabited by religious fanatics who use rays to make passing starships’ hulls vibrate in exactly the tones of church bells. Regardless of what damage it might do to those hulls, as it is more important to save souls.

Winky never dies. He only loses or damages his spleen. Ensign Kenny symbolizes the red shirted crew members on Star Trek who always dies and gets replaced by next week’s show.

Monsters on Mars would make a good name for a rock group, as Dave Barry used to say.
