*9 Chickweed Lane without the smug pretentiousness and romanticism.
*King of the Hill with a watered-down distaff expy of Cotton Hill.
It’s the same script when these two go at it:
Jane: Why do you hate me so much, Mommy?
Mom: Because I don’t need you! I’ve got a gravy train, and I’m gonna ride her in style ‘til I kick the bucket! As a matter of fact, I don’t know why I had you in the first place!
Jane: MOM!
Mom: Oh, come off it! You’ve given me nothing but failure and disappointment! I should’ve [REDACTED], but it’s much more satisfying to see you suffer! You’ve got nowhere else to go! I’m all you’ve got!
A similar situation on another comic strip took two strips to shut it down. Why Jane doesn’t do this instead of trying to engage her mom as if they were equals, I don’t know. I hope something happens during this arc that proves me wrong and makes this post merely a late-night ranting from some dumb loony who reads too much into comic strips. Then again, it is a comic strip.
Moms just want their daughters to be happy. Even if it comes across the wrong way. I’m a daughter. I’m a mom of a daughter. I get it. My mom nagged me. I’ll nag my daughter when she’s older. And the mom/son relationship is different. I probably won’t nag my son as much. But I’ll hate every girl he brings home because she’s trying to steal my boy!!

That’s why she doesn’t want one. She has one already.

So today’s strip is:
