such a bizarre and wasteful custom – using prime growing land to raise a useless crop of items that are used for decoration and then tossed out. (actually, I am just really jealous as jack-o-lantern pumpkins here are out of season and to buy one you will spend $20-$27 A KILO… so a 5 pound pumpkin will cost you over $50! how does compare to you over there?)
I have a neighbor who would just carve any gourd she could find; she stopped because she did not have the patience to let them dry out slowly so she would dry them in the oven and they would come out with winkles. She isn’t a pumpkin fan either.
Ah, yes! Pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, and of course, pumpkin pie. After it’s been carved and displayed, it can still use eaten. Just cut off the dried edges, peel it, and go. It’s a squash, so full of all sort of Good Stuff.
In Wisconsin I take the three granddaughters to a produce stand that has various sizes and colors of pumpkins. Can’t recall the price, but they’re pretty cheap.Once in St. Petersburg, FL, I let a jack-o-lantern sit too long on a ping-pong table in the Florida room. When I took it up several weeks after Halloween, it had leaked onto the table and made a little puckery spot. I took it outdoors – the rind kept it pretty intact – and threw it down into the composter. It splatted flat as a pancake. I never could grow pumpkins in Florida – my thumb is not green.
Then there are the special punkins grown for punkin chunkin. Be it air cannon, trebuchet, catapult, human powered, whatever. About ten pounds with a thicker skin.

Paint the pumpkin instead of carving. Then you can still use it for pies or soup.

I wish you were just a drawing. Why do you even read comics? You have absolutely no sense of humor.

trader joe’s had mini-kins for 69 cents, the bigger carving one we got (the squirrls will eat it, but nice for seeds still) was $3
