Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for November 04, 2014
Transcript:
Mike: Hey! Where you going, Zonk? I just put dinner on... Zonker: No time to eat! I got my dancin' shoes on! Mike: Dancing? I thought you hated discos! Zonker: Not true. It was my upbringing. My parents never allowed me to strut my stuff! But all that's changed now! I'm a natural-born boogie child, and if stayin' alive means gettin' down, then gettin' down is where I'm at! Mike: What is this, a modern parable? Mark: More like a stage. Zonker: Hey, call me a dancin' fool! I don't mind!

It’s interesting this strip is from November 4th in 1978, which puts it just two weeks after Frank Zappa introduced his song “Dancin’ Fool” on Saturday Night Live on October 21st. Not sure how much lead time Trudeau would have needed for a strip back then. If he didn’t see the performance on SNL before writing Zonker’s dialogue, it’s a funny coincidence. (Yes, I do realize the phrase predates Zappa by a fair number of years, it’s just that the song made it a popular catchphrase in the weeks that followed.)

Zonk went full disco with the travolta suit. A lot of hippies were not so fond of disco.

Disco sucks. Disco sucked. Disco will suck. Disco will have been sucking.

Disco was so much better than what came after that I like it now.
Whatever happened to common sense? about 10 years ago
Everything about disco (the music, attitude, etc.) was pure rubbish and had no redeeming value. It was nothing but a trashy fad which fortunately did not last long. Why people still dredge up references to this era (including these strip reprints) is beyond comprehension. Just bury this garbage and let it stay that way.

I could never dance. But I loved disco music so much—it made me dance inside myself. And it was w-a-a-ay-y-y-y better than what they call music today,

Thanks for posting ‘Dancing Fool’… can’t believe how much I liked Zappa. Made me look up ‘Trouble Coming’ – recorded the year I graduated H.S.; 1966, nothing changes… http://youtu.be/girnJH7tvpM

I never was into anything after music of the ’50’s and classical stuff, but do recall that in the summer of 1963 our family spent the summer in Decatur, AL, where my husband taught a full day’s courses for c. six weeks at the Decatur Iron and Steel Company. I called it “DISCO Tech.” Hee, hee?

“Science has just proven that Americans, (who can barely get their **** together on the assembly line) find it absolutely UNPOSSIBLE during their precious off-duty hours to dance to any song unless it’s in 4/4 at 120 beats per minute — no ****in’ around now — no 119 — no 121 — gimme the old 120 and turn up the g****m handclaps! OW! OW! OW! I’m dancin’! I’m dancin’!*”
