Changing the rules for overtime (5 players instead of 6).
The shootout.
The “losing” team getting a point in the standings.
15 minutes of overtime is the obvious solution. But by going to a timed OT, the NFL would have to admit that soccer has the right idea. Never happen.
WaitingMan, points (1) and (2) would both be preferable to ending in a tie. The NHL is a bad example, because it’s hardly American anyway…
The only sport where timed OT works is basketball, since in even a shortened extra period you’ve got a million scoring opportunities. Again: If you’re content to have a tie as a final score, why bother with overtime in the first place?
