Actually, the text was written first and the illuminated capitals added. Gutenburgh’s first printed Bibles had a blank space so they could be added, just like the scribes’ handwritten texts, for a higher status version.
Al S.: True. I was concentrating on the illuminated capitals, rather than the text itself. I also drew from a paper for History of Christianity class in seminary, rather than the varying reliability of Wikipedia.
