Joe: Ok...so you followed the food pyramid believing it's the formula for a healthful diet... Bob: Yeah. Joe: ...and now you're obese... Bob: Whatever. Joe: So the real question is, who wrote the food pyramid? Bob: Hmm...a benevolent government nutritionist who cares about us? Um...wait... Did I just say "benevolent" and "government" in the same sentence?? *sob* Joe: Let it all out, Bob... Bob: I used to be such a devout cynic...

Despite my better judgment, I actually watched an episode of “South Park” dealing with this very issue (“Gluten Free Ebola”).

They got rid of the pyramid, and tried some steps for awhile, then decided a plate was better. Anywho, less starch, more fruits and veggies. I think the original pyramid was written to justify cheap diets fed to inmates and military personnel.

Just use dessert plates for your entrees.
But really, Bob. The benevolent one who cares about you is your brother…listen to him.

I go back to before the “pyramid”, back to the “four food groups” (Cream, Bread, Raspberries, and Vanilla Fudge)..Actually, that was a joke I came up with back in the ’70s. The four groups were meat, dairy, grains and fruits/vegetables..Looked up some history of the concept, and at one time there were twelve food groups, and you were supposed to have something from each one every day. Eggs were in a special group all by their lonesome; so were potatoes.

Actually Bob, the Food Pyramid was likely written by a bunch of (government) lawyers.

Next Bob will be praising Michelle O’s nutritional opinion. He is going to need a double bourbon stat; his fruity drinks are not doing him any good.

The original food pyramid was heaviy influenced by the meat and dairy industries, who got their politicians to tell the agency what to do. Same Old, Same Old.

My four food groups are salt, sugar, fat, and caffeine. Time for Krispy-Kreme and Koffee.

To all liberals who voted for Obama and Obamacare:.Here is a direct quote from economist Jonathan Gruber, one of the Obama administration’s consultants on the Affordable Care Act:.“This bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes,” he said during a panel discussion at the University of Pennsylvania in October, 2013. "Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the ‘stupidity of the American voter’ or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to getting the thing to pass.”.So now it is finally in the open. Who is it that the Democrats need to support them and their programs? The stupid..…and did you notice his comment about “Lack of transparency?!”..Didn’t Obama say this was the most transparent administration in history?.Oh well, he’s your president…stupid.

Well Bob, believe you are actually being sarcastic. Not cynical. The ‘food chain’ stuff is now archaic.

Someone please explain to this poor confused Canadian why the President of the United States is personally responsible for a comic character’s unhealthy eating habits?
Can't Sleep about 10 years ago
Thanks for your opinion. Now what, do you think of the comic strip?
Can't Sleep about 10 years ago
I love reading the comments. Readers in the real world are commenting about the comics strip. And the tin-hat party attacks Obama and the government.

I think it’s all a ploy to get obesity into the Olympics. Imagine the Fat-tathalon…

I hereby volunteer the First Tsar (Czar) of Dark Chocolate and Cabernet-Sauvignon. A piece or two of the 72% cacao with a glass of Cab (NO MERLOT, too light) is quite good and is actually beneficial.

Annnnnd there is the biggest over-looked issue with weight gain I’ve seen among those old enough to drink but not old enough to have too many medications that interact with it..Booze is a way to store calories over the winter without spoiling. It’s fermented grain or potatos or what ever sugar you can get yeast to eat. “Lite beer” is an oxymoron, and when you toss in sugar mixers to make the hard stuff palitable, you’re adding evne more calories. .One ditz in our office made a big deal about only eatting salads and lean protien, and then she’d go out drinking and down over 500 calories worth of beer! (Most lite beer is about 100 calories per 12 oz.) You can not claim your “eatting healthy” and then go down a Big Mac worth of booze (PLUS snacks to help it stay down…) Even a single glass of wine (5 oz) tacks on an average of 125 to your meal..If you assume Bob’s little umbrella drink is a white Russian, each of those things is about 300 calories per 4 oz.Whiskey sour? 175Vodka and cranberry? 150

“The Food Pyramid is one of the key reasons obesity has soared in this country since it was invented in the 70s — especially since the ADA got a hold of it and added dairy to it.”.… the food pyrimid came out in the US in 1992. Unless “this country” you’re refering to is Sweden in which case, what obesity?.Before that it was the “4 food groups” and those were established by the USDA in 1956..IDK why people open their mouths to spout off without looking up the most BASIC information. Even wikipedia has a page on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_USDA_nutrition_guides

aspe.hhs.gov. Not sure if that’s where ab2’s information came from or if it supports that information. But if you’re interested it may be the most objective. Or it may be the most objectionable. Dunno..

Thanks for putting my thoughts into words that speak to the heart of the matter….Ignorance. Charles Dickens said the same thing in “Christmas Carol” and it still applies today.

Of course it was a benevolent government nutritionist, but they weren’t benevolent towards people, they were benevolent towards the food corporations with deep pockets for lobbying. No pyramids, cave men or program is necessary…just eat a wide variety of foods.

I was just curious.

But calling Bush Hitler was acceptable, right? It really is too bad that ignorance is only recognized as coming from the right. If the same standard that was applied to Dan Quayle was applied to Biden, Pelosi, Reid, and Obama we would see real ignorance.

The food pyramid? Really, Wiley? The last time I saw a food pyramid was over a decade ago. Now, they just say, eat more fruits and veggies, lol
