Television: Good evening from London. Today near Kabul, Afghan rebels staged another stunning raid on a Soviet encampment outside the troubled capital... Who are these plucky champions of Afghan independence What drives them to fight on against overwhelming odds? At great personal risk, our man Roland Hedley set out to find the answers. Unshaven and clad in the indigenous garb of an Afghan mountaineer, Hedley slipped unnoticed across the Afghan border and filed the following report. Producer: Rollie, I'm still getting glare from your nose. Sound Guy: Three... two... one! Roland: Good evening from Khyber Pass.

I sincerely doubt that the indigenous garb included a white buttoned down shirt and a red tie. (Or, for that matter, a yellow ‘Ohio State’ T-shirt…)

And we, the British, were fighting there in the 19th century. Opposition included an insignificant little group called the Taliban. Deja vu over and over again?

Perhaps the worst failure of U.S. intelligence agencies, creating this group to fight Russia and having it morph into a hydra of terror.

We should have just armed the freedom fighters! What could possibly go wrong with that strategy?

Actually, it’s about learning the wrong lessons from history. Everyone is always fighting the last war when they get started with the next one.

As long as they stay wary and don’t start a war that’s fine by me!
