AlnicoV: Seems like a waste of time. Guess I’m not as geeky as I thought. If you want realistic fantasy (I know, seems like an oxymoron), read the Black Company series. BTW, for me, reading The Lord of the Rings was a wonderful experience.
“Eagles are not kindly birds” quote from “The Hobbit”. They wouldn’t let thirteen dwarves and a hobbit ride them all the way to the Lonely Mountain out of the pure goodness of their hearts.
One does not simply fly into Mordor (sorry). The eagles would have been spotted by Sauron very early and would’ve been wrecked by the flying Nazgul. A lone (or two) member of an overlooked species, walking on foot, had a much greater change of succeeding. Give Gandalf some credit for his wits.
Gandalf’s last words before falling into the chasm with the Balrog was “Fly you fools”. He wanted them to take the Eagles to Mordor, but he kept that plan to himself since he never expected that he wouldn’t be around.
Two things I learned from reading the Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings back in 1968..Eagles were a lot bigger then….and..It is a good thing for us that spiders are NOT the size of a rottweiler..
Cause we can’t flyyyyyy through Mirkwood, guys. The spiders there don’t eat houseflies, And their webs reach to the skies, so we don’t fly through Mirkwood guys.

The eagles can do anything the story requires them. Deus ex machina.

NO, NO, NO the Eagles could not help as orcs would have shot them down. Plus they are lazy :P

That has been one of the arguments that geeks get into about those books since shortly after they were published.

The Eagles will always come through in the long run.

From oglaf.com (NSFW webcomic): one would not want to be on an Eagle’s back when it got hungry.

The eagles only helped because the Doctor (#7), I mean Radagast the Brown, sent them.

I was going to say that I didn’t get this … but then I realized I probably wouldn’t understand the explanation either.
