Janis: What?
Arlo: I remember when this happened to my parents! It was like the beginning of the end!
Arlo: Now it's happened to us!
Arlo: The table-top Christmas tree!
Artificial trees cost a lot and don’t stay lit after the first year. We do a “ceramic/glass” tree as part of a very large “city center” village set at 5 different areas in our living/kitchen area. So beautiful!
That’s funny. Our 7 ft artificial tree is getting ragged and were were thinking about going with a pre-lit table table top for next year. It’s just the 2 of us now and our room is kind of small. It’s not the size of the tree that counts, it’s what you hold in your heart.
we went down to a 4ft tree that we can put on an end table and not have to move a lot of furniture, and considering that our living room is very small it works best. The grandkids never come over to visit anyway, so who knows, maybe next year I will just do like Ratbrat and just get out some of the small stuff and skip the tree.
Same here! Love the tabletop! Planted a small, dwarf evergreen next to my front door, so we get that great pine scent as we walk inside! A string of lights on it, fast, easy & looks great! Nothing wrong with making Christmas easy & stress-free! More time to enjoy the season!
Pretty much any tree looks nice if you load it up with enough lights and family-made decorations. That’s the cool thing – everybody gets to decide for themselves how to celebrate.
Last year we had a death in the family two days before Christmas……no time for a tree because of the failing health of our loved one. This years tree has meaning…Love, joy, and sadness.
We went with purple tabletop. Yes, we are old.. Lol. Well, 69 . And purple represents one of the cancers. So we are making a statement, too. And blessed because our daughter is a survivor.
If you are going to give somebody something, it shouldn’t require a special occasion. I stock up on chicken feed so I can avoid the local bottlenecked shopping center entirely in November and December. My wife and I only do the traditional meals parts of any holidays, and she gives her grandkids a few things at Christmas, and advice to her kids all the time.
We bought a HUGE artificial tree about ten years ago, and put it in our sun room. Moving/storing it involves 4 hours work to dismantle it and the tractor to take it to the barn, so we just leave it up all year round.
Egrayj, it’s always hard to lose a loved one, but this time of year has to be the worst…….But good for you for getting a tree this year…..That’s the spirit….As sad as it can be, life needs to go on……..Gotta keep on keepin’ on……..Have a beautiful Christmas…..
My mom went with the tabletop a few years before I moved out. I can’t really talk because I had one for about 4 years. We were living in a tiny house with less than 1000 sq ft, both levels combined. We had no room for anything else and it’s just not Christmas without a tree.
My wife and I start doing our ‘trees’ around the middle of October. There are 11 trees this year, large and small, in our little house and 10,000 bobbles and decorations and lights. The house is glorious in every room. (Three big trees in the kitchen so we had to move the table out in the garage)
So on one day in December we open up the place on behalf of the local food bank and collect cash and food and gifts for folks who have less than we do.
I wouldn’t have Christmas any other way even if we do spend it alone now that the kids have all gone off to the farthest corners of the world.
@Bruce4671“A day reserved for a religious ceremony to mark the birth of a “savior” of a specific family group – the children of Abraham.”.Ah, but we are told in Galatians 3 that savior is for all:
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham..For the rest of what you said, yep, pretty much.
I picked up a small artificial tree for $1 at the local Dollar Store and have set it up on top of a file cabinet. While it is less than a foot tall, and has no ornaments on it, it is a big enough tree for me.In a more prominent place, however, I have a nativity set that a friend gave me.
Husband’s family has always had artificial trees so we have had same. We are on our 3rd tree (6.5ft, we have low ceilings) in 35 years. We do not get prelit trees (well, they started making them after we last bought a tree). Our tree is in 8 wedge shaped sections and a top section. Hang the wedges, adjust the branches, put on the top, ditto add lights – less than 45 minutes. Need a branch over there, move one of the branches. – Oh, and that is the main tree.
We have a tabletop tree in our studio off the kitchen with all ornaments we have made (more of them on the main tree).
Upstairs there is another table top tree in the middle of a teddy bear village that I have compiled over the years – all teddy decorations on the tree (and more on the main tree).
We also have a beaded tree, about a foot tall. I made the tree and the decorations, but the decorations stay on from year to year.
I have a small tree I made of foam sheets that is in a holiday figurine display.
We may add another tree next year as we donate to a museum and get an ornament every year and there are enough for another tree.
Our dining room is normally decorated to look like a colonial tavern. We decorate with greens as it would have been in period. Garland up the short banister of the stairs.
Living room has a grouping of large santas and elves, most we were given as gifts when husband went out to work, some I made. Additional decorations around including hand embroidered (by me) stockings and (ditto) hanging.
Outside lights, 2 wreaths (one each door) and electric candles in windows.
All this and no one sees it but us. When there is nothing else to the holiday but the decorating, one decorates.

Decorating our house for Christmas is a multi-day affair. It’s all topped off by a trip to the tree farm to hack down some poor innocent Blue Spruce.
I fear the day of the Table Tree. It will mean I’ve been incapacitated by age ore health…

When my husband and I down-sized to a condo we had a ‘table tree’ for x-mas. Now we have a tall, slender pre-lit tree infront of the window.

My mom didn’t put up a tree this year. Money was too tight for her to get presents for the grandkids.
