I had a dog that knew to stay away from the table while we ate. She occasionally had to be reminded, but just a small snap of fingers would remind her, and she would back up to the carpeted area, sit, and wait. We always made sure to reward her patience.
Cat, dog, or whatever, I’m not having an animal underfoot when I’m busy in the kitchen.
The fact that all of our pets have different personalities, even among their own kind, probably should give us pause…..What purpose could a cat’s personality have in the grand scheme of evolution?
Our dog doesn’t beg, and he won’t take anything that isn’t his. My sister’s dog would get so upset when she left the house that she started putting a rawhide “flip” on a chair someplace. Gracie would be so busy looking for the treat that she wouldn’t realize Lynn had gone. I tried putting a flip on the kitchen step stool, but Blazer wouldn’t take it. Still there when I got home.
The first time I prepared shrimp for the grill, I removed the tails and left them in the colander. After placing the shrimp on the grill I came back in and found several of the tails on the floor of the kitchen. I don’t leave the tails around anymore.
When I was in my twenties and going to college evenings, I had a cat who would never get near the card table I used for everything while there were plates and food on it. However, as soon as my homework came out, she would jump on the table and lie across my books and papers vying for her share of attention.
We’ve had house rabbits for over 16 years now. Our first pair, the boy was very laid back, but the girl could not stand meat cooking. she thumped and glared at me! It took her a long time to get used to it. (They were almost eleven when we lost them) Our second pair had no problems with what we cooked. We just adopted a little boy, he’s seven months old, and frying fish scares him to death! He runs around frantically trying to find a place to “be safe” from it. I guess that’s off the menu for ten years or so! (Rabbits can hurt or kill themselves when they get into a frantic panic and run madly around.)
Our cat hates shrimp. I give her gourmet sea bass and shrimp dinner , and she devours all the bass and leaves the one shrimp untouched on the plate every time.
My shop had a cat that loved cucumber peels. Clawmark would climb my leg, yowling until I gave her the peels. She was weird but a good cat, great mouser. RIP, Clawmark…
About 50 years ago I was giving table scraps to our cats. Cold bacon.I decided to hold it up so they would stand on hind legs to reach for it.I was wearing only shorts. One climbed up my legs, shorts, torso and out along my arm to get the bacon. As I watched the blood ooze out every toe/claw hold in sequence, I thought to myself, “Brought that on myself.”
My girls will ignore any human food I offer them… even though they might find the smell intriguing, my boy, on the other hand loves to get little bits of fish or meat.
I had a kitty who loved green olives with the pimento in them. He also liked coconut and raisins. I found out years later grapes and raisins (same thing) aren’t good for dogs or cats. Hope it didn’t hasten his demise. He lived to be 15.

My cats don’t know about shrimp so they don’t like it. They might if they tried it but I have no intention to let them.
