Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for December 20, 2015
Transcript:
Santa: "Ok boys, have we loaded everything?" Elf: "Ah, there's still the matter of this Calvin, sir. His list is 30 pages long, not including the supplement about incendiary weapons. The research dept. thought you should handle this one personally." Santa: "Well, is he naughty or nice?" Elf: "Ah, a bit problematic, chief...here's his dossier." Santa: "Ohhh yes, the "Noodle incident" kid..." Elf: "That was a while ago, boss. He says he was framed, and we've had trouble verifying the particulars. Accounts seem to vary." Santa: "What about all these slushballs thrown at the girl down the street? My my my!" Elf: "No dispute there. Surveillance documents some 400 incidents, but the kid claims extenuating circumstances." Santa: "Hmm..don't they all." Elf: "A tiger vouches for the kid's character...says the kid tries to be sort of good if he's not tempted otherwise" Santa: "What do his parents say?" Elf: "Here's the dad's comments. We're looking into the sarcasm factor." Santa: "All right, I've made up my mind. Is the boy asleep yet?" Elf: "Ah, no. He's wide awake" Hobbes: "Santa won't come until we're asleep, you know" Calvin: "I CAN"T TAKE THE SUSPENSE!"

Things are not looking too good for our “noodle incident” hero.

The noodle incident? Boy, you make one mistake, and…….Click here or stretch image below: Peanuts (July 21, 1963)Today’s Calvin and Hobbes strip is one of Bill Watterson’s finest — extremely clever.By the way, the infamous noodle incident happened five years earlier:Click here or stretch image below: Calvin and Hobbes (September 14, 1990)Click here or stretch image below: Calvin and Hobbes (December 12, 1990)Click here or stretch image below: Calvin and Hobbes (May 20, 1992)

See also “the salamander incident.” Bill Watterson was deliberately vague about the two incidents because he wanted readers to use their imagination to fill in the details.

Memories. It was Christmas, and the one thing that lingers is the knowledge that Calvin and Hobbes was about to end.

I’ve got a print of this one. I love it. I’ve also got prints of a couple Red & Rover Christmas strips. Red doesn’t get into nearly as much trouble as Calvin does though.

Just think, when the strip ends here, it starts all over again.“This is the song that never ends,It goes on and on my friend . . .”

“The noodle incident.”
I’m dying for the particulars.

In today’s strip, it appears that Calvin’s dad’s comments, which contain the sarcasm factor, may have been the final piece of evidence that influenced Santa to rule in favor of Calvin receiving presents this Christmas. This strip contained Bill Watterson’s final reference to Calvin’s dad.

Thanks for the reminder Hobbes. I had forgotten about the "Noodle Iincident. I remember how my imagination tried to work through all the different scenarios that would be plausible. God I miss Bill Watterson. The guest spots on Pearls Before Swine were an infuriating tease.

Say your prayers and go to sleep, Calvin!

Calvin represents lot of children around the world for Santa yet forget the real reason for CHRIST mas meaning more about receiving gifts then worry about being good and spend sleepless nights wondering what they will be getting.

For a moment, I thought that was Calvin in the 1st panel dressed as an elf.
Santa looks good in pink by the way.

It really says something about The Noodle Incident when even Santa and his elves aren’t completely sure what happened. By the way, isn’t this the last reference of The Noodle Incident?

I always imagined the “Noodle Incident” involved substituting worms into Miss Wormwood’s lunch one day at school…

A nice clever detail I just noticed: In the second to last panel, the elf is looking at Calvin through a TV, which appears to be circular shaped. Transitioning into the final panel, which is also circular shaped, implying that we’re seeing that panel through the elf’s eyes. Bill W.’s attention to detail is fantastic.

Calvin is more likely to get a visit from Krampus.

Hi rgcviper. Glad you are still here. I’m “back visiting” for the holidays, through the end of this run of Calvin and Hobbes. Then it’s back to my regular work schedule.

Hobbes was ever the voice (or at least thought) of reason.
