For those who don’t know, the monitors in the first panel are displaying Funky Winkerbean and Les Moore. Dick Tracy and Funky Winkerbean are beginning their cross-syndicate crossover today.
The one awkward point is that Crazy Harry Klinghorn and John Howard in Funky Winkerbean were saying that the proceeds from the auction will be split between Finley’s and the police, while Dick is telling Sam that the proceeds are going to charity (presumably “Lisa’s Run,” an in-strip breast cancer fundraiser that also occurs annually in Medina, Ohio).
Rikki’s friend says that he will see to it that I will be able live forever! I met him. He’s a cool guy. Wears a tuxedo everywhere and he is a magician, too! I saw him appear to turn into a bat! No kidding!
I love crossovers. What’s different about this one is that Funky Winkerbean isn’t on GoComics. It’s done by the other other syndicate over at Comics Kingdom.
So many things HAPPENNING in the Tracy World and – _at such SPEED?" Leaves readers Breathless . . .
Two Sundays ago it was the appearance of new villains - Tbolt, and an unnamed Boss, likely picked from the 2017 roster ? Given the unresolved cases (earlier announced) like the Nitrates, Stiletta Jones, Blackjack, B-B Eyes, Mumbles, Doublrup, Abner Kadaver and the larger Blackhearts Group ?
Then today, time on their hands (?), there’s Tracy about to drive to an out-of-town Comic Book Auction ?While, many incomplete, UNEXPLAINED current events - now pushed in the past . . ..(and Forgotten ?)
1) What ever happened to *Gruesome ? Last seen in Handcuffs, Lizz behind him, asTracy and Sam departed for the Hospital to see his new Grandson. Like at Patterson Theatre, NO other police were seen to be present ?Did Gruesome escape ? Or was he put in a Cell at HQ ?
2) Was a report made to Chief Patton on the Gruesome case ? There;s been no further mention of the case ?
3) Where there any casualties / injuries at the Patterson Theatre after the Explosion ? Are Mel O Dee and the un-named Stage Director Alive ? Seems Agate Aggie has survived >p?4) Was that BODY of Janitor Otis found ? Any further ‘charges’ (murder?) laid against Gruesome ?
Left behind ! One’s really got to ‘Catch A Breath’ here. A bit “disoriented” ? . . . Try, to get up to speed * . . .*
Perhaps take that Dollar note Lbolt’s Boss handed out, and see if you can buy a Comic Book at the Auction ?
That way, you’re sort of ‘- keeping up’* with Dick “Twinkle Toes” Tracy !
Most likely, it’s this one: http://www.funkywinkerbean.com/legacy.html
For those who don’t know, one of Funky Winkerbean’s characters, Lisa Moore succumbed to breast cancer in 2007. The run takes place both in-strip and in real life.
Hopefully it will lead to some genuinely fun Funky Winkerbean strips that will not be focused on how depressed the characters all are. Of course, the theme has to be comic books, but I’m still looking forward to this. Wonder if Mason Jarr the movie actor will have a major part (you have to follow FW to get the joke, here).
If you follow the crossover in “Funky Winkerbean,” just do NOT read the comments. I don’t know why, but Funky gets some of the most hateful comments I’ve seen for any comic strip.
Some Comics Kingdom-affiliated websites don’t even use the comments option… Cleveland.com is one of them.
Funky Winkerbean unfortunately has a significant hatedom for a variety of reasons, and that’s been the case since the strip took a serious turn about 25 years ago. A lot of people were upset about how Lisa Moore (the first wife of Les Moore, pictured in the bottom monitor) lost a battle with breast cancer in an agonizing, slow manner.
Personally, I have more of an issue with the writing mechanics than anything else.
Kind of off-topic but I just found an interesting comment in an interview with Joe Staton: “One of our own characters who turns up occasionally is Abner Kadaver. He seems to be dead at the moment, but he may not stay that way. He either has really good makeup or is dead-looking.” So, maybe he’s not really as hideous-looking as he seems to be.
Another interesting Staton comment, considering the last few days of the strip: “We have long term plans for some of the characters. Honeymoon is one of our favorite characters, and we were discussing her growing up.”
We’ve seen that particular “jumble” of comic books before, in the 2013 Jumbler story. Staton originally did the Starbuck Jones cover as a guest artist on the Funky Winkerbean strip: https://comicskingdom.com/prints/new/ZGF0ZT0yMDEzLTExLTEwJmZuPTExODI=?ref=ck_thestar
Last November, there was a great blog post about the Funky Winkerbean crossover on Comics Alliance: http://comicsalliance.com/dick-tracy-funky-winterbean-crossove/
One of the readers over at Comics Kingdom made a good point – just why are Funky and Les on the MCU monitors? In our present story, the police have no knowledge of them – unless we want to believe there really is a spy network such as is depicted on the show “Person of Interest”
Fresh from the “credit where it is due” file at the Dick Tracy Depot:.Hopefully Joe Staton won’t mind if I boost one of his comments regarding today’s Sunday (1/18/2015) strip. I found it pretty cool and goes to show the talent working for Team Tracy with inker/letterer Shelley Pleger stepping up..“Secrets of the comics revealed. Mike Curtis and I had some problems with the original version of this Sunday and we were running out of time. Shelley Pleger, our resourceful inker/letterer sprang into action. “Here’s a sketch, guys, maybe this will work,” she said. “Perfect!” we replied, and I inked her sketch and it was done. We’re sure she could go on without either of us if the need ever arose.” – Joe.Let me add my voice to chorus, well done Shelley!.Me, too. Hats off to Shelley Pleger, whose talent is a vital part of Team Tracy. Her good works are an important part of the two-time Harvey Award winning strip I enjoy every day. Cheers to Ms. Pleger! Jeers to Turnip Surprise!
Well, if Tracy is headed off to a comic book confab, maybe he’ll run into Marty & Spud’s creator creature trying to palm off a signed Issue #1, promising it will be priceless in collectors vaults in no time. I can see it now………. Z-z-z-z-z-z
Further to my previous post, there’s a new post about the Funky/Tracy crossover, now at Comics Alliance: http://comicsalliance.com/funkydick-funky-winterbean-dick-tracy-crossover/
I’l be in the death coach if I go down, Greedo. With the soothing music of Johnny and the Hurricanes in the background, followed by a chorus of “Monster Mash”.
