Calvin’s talent for carving snow animals is NOT appreciated by one of his parents I see.

Calvin will have to make the yellow snow himself.

Why did Calvin build a cat by a fire hydrant?

(Yes, I know it’s supposed to be a dog. Just sayin’ it looks more like a cat.)

My brother used to live on a hill, near the corner of a busy street. One year he built a giant “Kilroy”, with a huge nose, and two huge eyes, then off to either side, a big hand.

Calvin’s snow-dog: I somehow get the impression that the real-life fire hydrant didn’t quite meet with his approval! Kind of reminds me of a recent Luann strip of Puddles lifting his leg on a bag of new, healthy dog food! Note: if it HAD met with his approval, well then he would have stamped his paw print on it.

Cute — brings in just the right tone of voice for Mom or Dad, whichever it is off-screen. .Or maybe it’s actually Dave off-screen. Or Simon. Or Theodore.

Like any great artist, Calvin sees a space as incomplete. He then creates what is needed to fill the void and complete the space. Sort of the inverse of a sculptor removing all the bits of material that don’t look like a dancer, or a human figure, or whatever.

It would be like “Leave it to Beaver” if “Beaver” was funny.

That was the kind of life Bill Watterson’s mother wanted to live. She convinced her husband — a patent attorney — to move from Washington to a small town near Cleveland, Ohio.In addition to being a homemaker, she was active in local politics, serving on the town council. Watterson’s father also served on the town council.

This comic strip is powered by i-m-a-g-i-n-a-t-i-o-n.*Which is why even if you or I could draw this well, we could not create a “Calvin & Hobbes” strip every day.

His parents did encourage his artistic interests. I know that a few years ago, there was a story about Bill Watterson and his father painting local landscapes in the town they lived in.
