Any one familiar with train travel would know that there are wagons at the station depot to carry luggage, sometimes called a station wagon or more recently, taxi.

Now they are called “crossovers” in some cases two wheel drive SUVs for people who need a minivan, but don’t want to be seen in one.

1972 Chevy Impala station wagon. That boat was so large you could lay a 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of plywood flat in the cargo area. Had a 396 cubic inch 4 barrel. You could watch the gas gauge move to empty while driving on the highway. I loved that monster.

For some bizarre reason, “station wagon” is now a forbidden word! Although folks still haul a$$ around in them, they are now called SUVs, Crossovers, etc.!.My wife has her station wagon; a Cadillac SRX…

You’re even more of a plugger if your grandchild does know about station wagons.

pelican47: It dates from the time the man made the money and the wife did everything else; she took him to the commuter station and had the oversize vehicle for children’s bus until time to pick him up again. Then some car maker decided to call them ranch wagons, and they thought those were export to Australia (ranch = station) even though the steering was on the wrong side..Elite1grey: No, the resort-owned bus on a truck chassis is a charabanc.

“Station”…. In Australia you have cattle stations and sheep stations (ranches). Maybe that’s where it comes from.

When I was a kid, our next door neighbor had one of the first woodys , brand new. It was green with gorgeous real oak (?) panels on the sides. I don’t think the wood lasted the whole first year without showing weather damage. it looked a bit like later station wagons but I doubt they called it that. I have no idea what make it was. Anybody know?
