If baby boomers were born between 1946 and 1964 as most authorities say, then he would be one of the greatest generation. I was one of the first baby boomers born (1946) and I’m only 68.

Isis, or whatever we’re calling the nut cases in the desert these days, is a blip on the radar compared to the Nazis. Granted, they may be just as crazy, but so far they aren’t in power in any country, much less having taken over a good sized chunk of the world.

I count anyone born to The Greatest Generation as a Baby Boomer. If you were of age to fight in WWII, and you had a kid, that kid certainly isn’t part of your generation, it’s the next one, which is generally called ‘The Baby Boomer’ generation.

He is part of the Silent Generation. Their older siblings or parents were greatest generation, these folks were kids during the depression or WWII. Per Wikipedia: born in mid 20’s to early 40’s….“Silents” are called that because many focused on their careers rather than on activism, and people in it were largely encouraged to conform with social norms. Time Magazine coined the name in a 1951 article entitled The Younger Generation, and the name has stuck ever since.

How about – try for a different kind of Greatest Generation? The Peace Makers. The Inventors. The Greatest Space Explorers. The Ones that Cured Everything! or The Ones that Fixed Everything! ….. and ok. the generation that ended terrorism. (but I think that might come under Peace Makers.)

Boomers are considered those born between 1946 and 1964. Grandpa just missed (born 1943 or 44 if he’s 71).

I think trying to ascribe particular years to one generation or another is just an easy shorthand for magazine articles and other gross oversimplifications. I was born in 1965, and have seen articles that insist that I’m my parents generation and others that say I’m Gen X, with whom I have no particular kinship, not having swooned over Grunge music or hopeless Ennui. Fact is, I was born to parents who were born to people who were or were not The Greatest Generation depending on who you ask. Ask me? Stop trying to put rigid limits on something that’s fluid.

The Greatest Generation? Go back and really study history this time. The greatest generation were those of the American Revolution who set out to do something that had never been done before and managed to do it.

If he’s 71 in 2015, that means he was born in 1944; 2 years before the start of the Boomer generation.
