    My family had those superstitions too. Also: If your foot itched, you were going to go on a trip. If your nose itched, you were going to kiss a fool.

    Josh Lyons: It depends on one’s sensitivity. There is a documented case of getting a reaction from a 10-year-old dried specimen in the SMU herbarium. (As a student, I prepared some of the specimens, but still not reactive to Rhus.)

    dzw3030: Even though immune at last report, I never touch the stuff. You can lose immunity overnight, as you so ably document. Cashews are poisonous while the plum-like “stem” is edible. The nut must be roasted first.
