In the slang of that period it usually meant a low hillock or grass mound by the meadow…

I think Rhadamanthus* is right. That’s how I always pictured a tuffet. And I always thought curds and whey was cottage cheese

Behind every ottoman lurks A troop of suspic-i-ous Turks. Their scimitars held at the ready To engage in behavior behead-y. This, then should be your motto, man - Don’t linger too close to an ottoman.

(in the second line, suspicious needs an extra syllable for the proper meter).

This is from “Seinfeld’s Fairy Tales”.

And what’s up with this whey business? Did you ever taste that stuff? It’s like… no WAY!

Curds and whey are made in the process of turning milk into cheese. Curds become the cheese, whey is the leftover liquid that drains away.

Along came a spider who sat down beside her, but instead being frightened away, she decided to confront her phobia and tuffet out.

Ricotta is produced from whey, the liquid separated out from the curds when cheese is made.

I like the second verse from Pearls before Swine, went something like:

Then Muffet went back And checked her gun rack Pulling down a .357 She went to the spider And sat down besider her And blew the poor sucker to heaven.
