Zonker: Well, Michael, I've finally come to a decision. It took me most of the night, but I feel good about it. After four long years on the circuit, I've decided I've had enough. Tanning is a young man's sport, and it's time I stepped aside. I'm going to retire. Mike: Well, if that's what you want, Zonker. Zonker: Michael! Didn't you hear me? I said I'm retiring! From pro tanning! Mike: Oh... uh... what? Zonker, you can't! What about your fans? Zonker: Time heals, Mike. Besides, they'll always have their memories.

Fantasizing that he’s the Derek Jeter of his “sport,” which he isn’t. Great seeing how Michael is playing him along.

Realistic follow up in current strips would have Zonk being treated for skin cancer — his complexion and this history has him in the high risk population.

Mike seems to be studying. It just occurred to me that I have no idea what he majored (or minored) in. Anybody?

Well played, Mike. Nice recovery, and nice sensitivity to a friend’s emotional neediness.
