    One of the smartest people I ever met used to point his right thumb in the direction he wanted the screw to go, then check the direction his fingers curled. If there were six screws, he’d do that six times.

    That’s fine until you run into something that’s reverse-threaded, such as one of the pedals on a bicycle. Had to replace the pedals ages ago and found one of them screwed on “backwards.” However, it made sense compared to the rotation of the sprocket; were it threaded normally, the one pedal would unscrew and fall off while you pedaled.
