I was overpaid by a few cents an hour for a couple of years. When accounting discovered the mistake, they took the entire amount out in one paycheck. Yeah. That was fair.
Only in government and business will they expect their mistake to be paid back by you, with penalties or interest. My favorite is when a states child support collection system will garnish too much for child support then when it takes a few years to figure out it gets reduced retro-actively but they don’t do anything to try and get it back. Thus the person who paid too much likely will never get it back from the other parent who has long since spent it and may not even have a job to garnish. Yet they retro actively increase after the legal battle if needed and suddenly someone who was current is now behind and gets garnished and is expected to immediately pay it on the spot.

Since he seems to be a laborer, yes, they’ll ask for it back, with interest. If he were the CEO, it would become his regular paycheck.
