Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for April 24, 2015

Transcript:
Phoebe: I actually got picked not last for dodgeball! Maybe I should actually try to have fun with this.
Marigold: Phoebe is under attack! I SHALL SAVE YOU! I have vanquished an enemy for you!
Phoebe: Yes you have.
My public school elementary school gym classes were joint classes with boys and girls. But then my public middle school and high school gym classes were separated by sex. This was in the 1960’s. This also held true for my son’s gym classes. That would have been in the 1980’s. Guess it varies from school district to school district.
As wonderful as Marigold’s rescue of Phoebe was, it will be the end of her dodge-ball career if someone brings up Phoebe’s “pointy-headed friend” at the next call for dodge-ball teams.
Best kind of friend to have, one that will selflessly defend you, and who will also spare you from having to make the best of dodgeball. Awesome Marigold.
When we played dodgeball I used to pretend that I got hit in the first salvo. Then I was out and not risking injury.“OWW! That stings like a bugger! I’ll be okay. I’ll just walk it off.”
Our gym classes were girl only/ boy only in the 1960’s. I showed up for class as seldom as possible. We did not begin gym class until seventh grade, when most kids feel the worst about themselves anyway! I could have used a Unicorn! Still have nightmares!!

Why do you say that? I’ve seen no trappings that wouldn’t be in a public school.

This comic looks so much better in color! :D So I guess Mari turns red whenever she feels Phoebe is threatened.
