Actually, Jon would be more of a cartoon than a cartoonist (if he was real).

They must have something against cartoonist.

I think this is the 1st time anyone has said what John did for a living in many years

I see Liz’s parents have already “drawn” their own conclusions about cartoonists.

Joe-Allen,,, How do you know they are ignorant farmers? Because they only have $5 million in the bank?
…………Justice, the son of an ignorant farmer.

i understood for the first time what jon does.

Trust me, with the changes in the industry and syndication models these days as well as the collapse of the newspaper industry in upon itself, it’s the cartoonists who are doing the hyperventilating.

Maybe Jon is Jim Davis’ alter ego???
Daffyfan2009 over 14 years ago
Yeah. They don’t mention Jon’s occupation that much in the strip. It was nice that they brought it up. Also, Jon did tell his parents about Liz in another strip. It’s a bit surprising that it’s just now we see Liz talking to her parents about her relationship with Jon.
green_engineer over 14 years ago
So Jon is still a cartoonist. I thought he gave it up to be a full time minder to Garfield and Odie, so it’s good to know he still draws.

See. Joe, no emoticon, lots of humorless responses back. I KNOW you were fooling around.

If the cartoonist carried Jim Davis’s paycheck it’d probaby be all right.

Hey HappyChappy most of what you said could be said about Liz parents as well!
runar over 14 years ago
HappyChappy, Joe may be all the things you said, but that doesn’t change the fact that Jon’s family are “ignorant farmers” - and “simple-minded” to boot. That’s the whole joke about them.
I’d find it hard to believe that there are *no* ignorant or simple-minded people among the nation’s farmers.

Cartoonist?!
CARTOONIST!!!??!?
hyperventilates

I still don’t believe he has any job. I never see him working. Also, he would be fired the first day for incompetence. He must have just been bragging to Lizzie.

Some farmers - like myself - have Master’s Degrees. I liked my “previous life” of the city stuff, where I made enough money to get out and get this farm….
getmoreatp over 14 years ago
Hmm, I thought Jon’s being a cartoonist was dropped from the strip several years ago. I guess not, which is good =)
Justice22 over 14 years ago
If you are “ignorant”, you are not a farmer. You are out of business. You may be ignorant and be a farm laborer where you are told each thing to do.. Who knows? Joe-Doty, you might be able to get a job on the farm slopping the pigs.
HappyChappy over 14 years ago
Thanks Justice22. My dad wan’t stupid, he did spend too much money on cars though, I mean who needs more than 1 Jaguar for heavens sake. We didn’t have any animals on our farm but our neighbour kept pigs and I am sure they would be offended if you sent Joe-Doty to slop them out.
Runar - You may be right about their being some simple minded farmers out there but the proportion would be much smaller than that in the overall population. I used the word “Bigot” very much on purpose because it describes people who believe and perpetuate stereotypes.
funcapervy over 14 years ago
been following garfield since day one and its always the same. what does jon do. the first strip introduced jon as a cartoonist drawing a strip about his cat garfield . they dont mention it enough. people love the 4th wall stuff. the new cartoon deals with that constantly..
pattybf over 14 years ago
To Joe, Runar and all the rest who are willing to categorize anyone who farms as ignorant. Who the heck do you think feeds all of us? Unless you only eat things that are imported from other places. And, come to think of it, those things are raised by a bunch of “ignorant farmers” too. Shame on all of you . I would like to put you on my aunt and uncle’s farm for a couple of weeks during the planting or harvest season and see how you fare. You would never make it.
drgu1290 over 14 years ago
What’s wrong with being a cartoonist?
TemporalParadox over 14 years ago
Wow. The “ignorant farmers” thing was clearly a joke. Did it occur to anyone that that was what Liz’s parents would say, not necessarily what Joe himself would say?
runar over 14 years ago
pattybf, I wasn’t characterizing all farmers as ignorant, but that Jon’s family is. That’s part of the joke. You’re just as bigoted a the people you are railing against. For the record, I did spend summers in my youth working on a cousin’s farm.
Why don’t you go find a “Ma & Pa Kettle” movie to picket?
BigHug over 14 years ago
I doubt that Joe was saying that all farmers are ignorant just Jon’s parents. Check out the wiki on Garfield to see how swift Jon’s parents are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garfield

Joe walked right into that one!
The fact is, Jon’s family IS really straight out of the Beverly Hillbillies, with a touch of extra inbreeding, and they happen to have a farm, if you know this comic at all. They are quite “colorful”.
But man, oh, man, Joe walked RIGHT into that one! For someone who claims to be so edumacated, you could have phrased it more precisely so as not to offend the rest of the world!
I’m not sticking up for Joe after the things he’s done to me. I’m just saying (repeat paragraph 2).

At least this had nothing to with Garfield himself.
There is a The Garfield Show (CGI animated) episode where Jon met Liz’s parents.

To put a cap on it - don’t confuse “ignorant” with “stupid”. Ignorant doesn’t mean “stupid”, only “uneducated”.
