Even if technology started moving backwards and a new stone age dawned- from our point of view, that’s still the future.-———————————————————————Wonder exactly when we stared confusing ‘the future,’ meaning any time that is ahead, but we cannot ever each by its nature of being ahead- with “The Fuuuuuuutuuuurrrrrrrrreee” a highly, technologically advanced society that could be right now if only we had all that cool stuff already.
@Thomas Scott Roberts — Good question! Of course there is nothing new about a new political, religious, or ideological endeavour promising paradise on earth, but I would suppose we didn’t expect technology to be the difference-maker until the 2nd half of the 19th century. Before that, the Industrial Revolution was too spotty, and this “future” is implied in the works of Jules Verne and “The Thousand and Second Tale of Scheherazade” by Edgar Allan Poe (1850).

Take a look at places like Mexico City with Google Earth then tell me you don’t think we’re headed down a path to an “Elysium” type of society!
