reminds me of my job, capped on out pay scale when asking for a raise we get told nope…but if we apply for a better paying job elseware, give our two weeks notice they offer us more to stay.
Which at that point if you do, you just blew EVER working for the job you already accepted.

The other problem here is that the old supervisor can then “stab the subordinate in the back” with that reference and make it difficult for the worker to get that next job.
