Ernesto: Ah, Peter! What brings you to this remote corner of the library? Petey: Ernesto? What are you doing? Ernesto: I'm spending the summer at the library, as is my wont, in a refuge of solitude constructed of desks and chairs and study carrels. This is my finest one yet! Ernesto: It's not quite the refurbished extinct volcano of my dreams, but it's a splendid base of operations. Petey: I went to Cartoon Camp! Ernesto: Ha ha! Did they spell it "KARTOON KAMP" in the brochure? Not to mock the Arts, of course, but ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Petey: It's a- Ernesto: Well, busy busy busy. I'll see you soon, I'm sure! Petey: Yeah, um. Okay! Mom: "Calming the Overactive Imagination." "Get a Grip on Your Imagination." "Seperating Fact from Fantasy." Are you going to read all these? Petey: Over and over.

Study those texts with care, Petey, and then come to a reasoned judgment whether Ernesto exists or not. If he does exist, the next item will be to identify any refurbished extinct volcano….

First real suggestion, as far as I have seen, that Ernesto may be imaginary. Else Petey could have simply introduced him to mom.

I was thinking that Petey hopes the books will help him quell his fantasies about Fifty Ways to Do Ernesto In. . . .

The thing is, Petey himself doesn’t know for sure if Ernesto is real or imaginary. He can’t comprehend how someone like him could exist, so he believes he is making him up. Petey doesn’t really want anyone having yet another reason to believe that his mind is over-active.
