Are your kids good about sending letters from Camp?
I got one from Jojo today!
"Dear Dad, is it true that cars will drive themselves in the future?
Its true.
Computers will soon replace human drivers,
Why?
I can’t wait! I hear people’s reaction to self-driving cars is similar to the reactions to self-operating elevators when they first came out. I heard a podcast about it and they said people would step into an elevator, look around, see no elevator operator and jump back out. They would go to the front desk to complain about the lack of an operator to be told that it’s automatic now. People refused to ride them. The elevator industry had to create a marketing plan (commercials, radio ads, etc) to try to soothe the public’s fear of riding in elevators without an operator.
Now we walk into elevators without any thought at all. It will be exactly like this with self-driving cars. I bet our great-grandkids will think we’re all nuts having been so leery in the beginning!
Probably much sooner than 50 years. I’m betting on 10-20 years. And I don’t think all of them will be 100% self driving. Some companies are designing cars with an override system to allow the human to take over. But the issue with that is, human error is more prevalent and scary than computer error. I bet any accidents that happen, happen due to a human overriding the system and causing an accident.
Elevators are a good example. More accidents and deaths occurred when they were operated by humans than when they went automated.
And because computer controlled cars give the government better control over who goes where.Think. If you give control of your car over to a computer – who controls the computer?
@@DOSQueen @Nicole“I am surprised so many people are willing to give up their autonomy.”.They gave that up when they stopped growing only their own food, cooperating with each other to create a better personal environment for everyone..If I fly, I don’t go to the time and expense to learn to personally fly, buy an aircraft, maintain it.I buy a ticket and let a professional handle the important part of moving me while I handle the things which are important in my life..(Besides, the government and anyone else interested already knows everything I say and do. It is just that nobody is interested.)
I suspect self-driving cars’ greatest impact will be increasing the independence of the elderly. They’ll just need their grandkids to program them first!

That’s what they said about the first cars, too. Never replace the horse.

Even though there have been a few accidents lately, they’d still be safer than his mother doing the driving.
