Also, this reminds me of a morning I had at a B&B in Maine about 20 years ago. The owner’s cocker spaniel sat on the floor next to me as I was served breakfast. She told me to ignore him, and not give him anything. Whenever her back was turned I slipped the pup a morsel!
Hehe. I think there’s an ambiguity about exactly how much volume “under the table” covers. :D Is it only the spots where you’d hit wood if you went up, or is it anywhere in the room that’s below tabletop height?
I’m careful what dinner food I give the cat. Some spices I cook with are not good for him. Onions are bad for dogs and cats. But canned cat food is 1.50/lb. Chicken on sale is 59 to 99 cents a pound.
When my mother-in-law would visit for a week, she’d spend the first two days slipping food to the dogs (after being asked not to), then the last five days complaining that the dogs wouldn’t leave her alone. She never figured out the connection to my knowledge. We could leave the dog’s favorite food on a foot stool and go to bed, in the morning the food would still be there. Put food on the floor and it was gone in seconds.
I fed our German Shepard peas from a casserole I didn’t want to eat, turns out, she didn’t like them either and spit them all out on the rug under the table. I was caught.

Do you feed your family foods that have spices and herbs that might upset their stomach? Or that they might be allergic to? Dogs can’t eat all people food. Chocolate, for example, can often kill dogs.
There are foods made for dogs that actually are better for them than people foods, believe it or not. Not all the commercial foods for dogs, naturally, because a lot of them are made to please the eye of the owner rather than help the health of the dog. But if anyone has questions about the best things to feed their pooches, they should check with their vets. Not just drop a spicy meatball off their own plate…
We ate lots of foods that aren’t good for animals- I’m sure I fed my dog grapes, not knowing- it seemed like the kind thing to do at the time, include the dog, but I’m sure it wasn’t. He became obese and diabetic.
Perhaps, families where they are aware of foods unhealthy for animals (we heard about chocolate and poinsettias, but that info wasn’t really out there then), and give in moderation, keeping the animals active and at a good weight, it might not be so bad. However, with children, neither the “good foods only” nor the “moderation” rules tend to work well.
Why doesn’t the dog have better dog food? I know this is the 70s/80s but even back then there had to be good dog food that wasn’t expensive. And people were actually making dog food back then too.
