Sarcasm is one of the forms of irony. All sarcasm is irony, but not all irony is sarcasm. The other form of irony could be defined as “a twisted reversal of expectations”, such as “He put on a suit of armor to be safe, and died when he was struck by lightning,”, or, “The fire truck was destroyed when it caught on fire.”

The ironic thing is that those statements aren’t ironic, they are sarcastic.

I’ve been told by British friends that in Britain, the word “ironic” has the same meaning as “sarcastic”. But not where I grew up in the US.

She doesn’t understand what IRONY is. I think the Born Loser title must apply to her too.
