Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for August 06, 2015
August 05, 2015
August 07, 2015
Transcript:
Doctor: Your temperature is normal! You're going to be fine!
Janis: You have the gentlest, most soothing manner!
Janis: What type of medicine did you practice?
Man: I was a large-animal veterinarian.
I’ve said this before, but, I love the way Jimmy draws this fellow’s ears. Their large size is a very realistic detail. His whole face is interesting. He looks “lived in” – comfortable and inviting. What a neat character! I wonder if he’ll have any future involvement with Gene and Mary Lou’s farm? I don’t really expect so… they’re not near, and have no large animals as yet. Just a thought.
Arianne, I couldn’t agree more. He’s the most interestingly drawn character in a while. As you say, he looks “lived in”. He also has a great deal of potential for the gentle humor Jimmy is so good at. Hopefully he’ll become a mainstay.
Good point about Vets knowing more than medical doctors, knew someone who wanted to be a vet, but he was rejected by the vet program because of his grades, but he did quilify for medical school.
I wonder if he knows the veterinarian Dr.Fleurrie Spocket working the Chickweed Lane area? Oh yeah, and thermometers don’t have to go where they once did. New technology.

Make her feel special, why don’t you?

They are the BEST! Critters can’t tell the doc where they hurt. He has to be smart and figure it out from symptoms.

If he speaks with a Dutch accent he could be the incredible Doctor Pol from mid-Michigan!

He’s thinking he retired but is still treating dumb animals.
Partyalldatyme over 9 years ago
“Dumb animals” refers to the fact that animals can’t speak for themselves and say where it hurts, not that they’re stupid. Dumb, as in deaf and dumb.

Credit the imagination of the storyline. You are not going to see this in any other comic.

Which means he was often up to his armpit in the hind end of cows.

Large animal vets take care of livestock, not just horses. They also usually do pets as well, but they’re the GPs of the veterinary world.

Reading your comments is almost as much fun as the strip itself.

Is Janice likely to be offended by the use of the words “large” or “animal”?
jadoo823 over 9 years ago
…I always thought vets had to be smarter than medical (people) doctors – medical doctors only have to know the anat/physiology of one animal…

Come the Zombie Apocalypse you’ll be glad to have your party include a large animal vet.
An awful lot of what they learn is applicable to humans and is more easily done under adverse conditions.
