The better ones had the advantage of also turning the inner agitator.

Now come on. We cranked homemade ice cream. The trick is having enough people around to share in the cranking. And it tasted great.

I loved the ice cream we made at home. My mother had created her own basic recipe, which could be flavored in various ways… especially enticing back when fruits were seasonal.

And I loved doing the cranking… even the whole way. Still would. I went looking for one of the old type a few years ago, with no success. Having been reminded by this cartoon, I’ll now try again. Amazon, eBay, etc. are much expanded since then.

I did get to have some hand cranked old fashioned ice cream once.

Don’t really even need an ice cream maker. After the “base” (with whatever flavor you decide to go with) has been made, it can be poured into individual molds and then placed in the freezer. I’ve made some awesome maple walnut and buttered pecan ice cream this way.
