Fun food fact: the allergen in peanuts is in the plumule — the little embryonic bit attached to the peanut itself. Because it can go stale in a hurry, it is not used when making peanut oil. Still, folks with peanut allergies are advised to screen for it in food products and food from restaurants (when they finally reopen).
Years ago you never heard anything about peanut allergies. Has the human immune system changed? Is it being caused by something in our diet, like more processed foods?
My first thought on reading this is surprise that Stick is drinking chocolate milk. One of the few allergies that I have seen in anybody I knew was my sister-in-law, who was allergic to chocolate (poor kid there too!). She used carob instead, and she apparently outgrew the chocolate allergy in her adult years . However, her mother still had her so convinced that she was still allergic to chocolate that her reaction instead became guilt when having any!
Come to think of it, it seems that other allergies that I’ve heard of have also gone away as the kids have grown up.
Howard Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory is allergic to peanuts, too. The scene from the episode “A Peanut Reaction”, where he goes to the hospital’s help window, is funny.
