Akin to why our mothers always wanted us to wear clean underwear without holes—“I don’t want to be embarrassed when I go down to the St. James Infirmary to identify your body.”
It seems to me that I saw a comic once where the wife was straightening up the house before they went out, in case burglars came while they were gone. She didn’t want anyone to think she was a bad housekeeper.
My wife cleans our house, from top to bottom, before we leave for a few days. She says it’s because she wants to return to a perfect house. I think its so that crooks think they are breaking into a home with lots of money, and instead they get really disappointed.
Actually Teena, My mother doesn’t trust the restaurant staff to properly clean the dishes so we take our own china and silverware to use when we eat out.
