This makes me think of that scene in Demolition Man with the rat burgers.

At a souvenir shop in Albuquerque they had small boxes of roasted crickets (barbecue and jalapeño flavored) and lollipops with scorpions and tarantulas in them.

The “ground beef stroganoff” on rice at university was often called “lice on rice”… even on the weekly published menu.

On 18th century sailing ships—especially naval ones—rats were one way of converting the stale, weevily hardtack into fresh meat. Not sure how cockroaches would taste, however.

I read once that adding rats to the diet in India would reduce the over population of that vector. It might simply have been disparaging propaganda at a time when that country had fallen out of our graces. Institutionalized racism. It’s amazing to realize how manipulative our own politicians have been. We were raised to believe what we were told, the real truth, unlike elsewhere.
